My rating:
4 of 5 stars
Main Characters: 4/5I was digging the dual POVs here because it gave us great characterization of both Elle and Darien. Great use of the Cinderella archetypes but with full characterization of both and their own internal conflicts.
Secondary Characters: 4/5 The evil step-mom and step-sisters are a hard trope to really flesh out, and I saw that here. HOWEVER- Poston threw a twist in there with at least one of our "villains" that I really appreciated. I really appreciated our one main side character, Sage, who works with Elle at the Magic Pumpkin. She was surprisingly likeable.
Plot: 4/5 Adorable and wonderful. I'll admit, there wasn't much to the basic romance that was new, but what was there was well-done.
Writing Style: 4/5
Poston did well. It flowed, it filled my heart, and it characterized Elle and Darien through their POVs.
Ending: 3/5
Seemed a little rushed, but very sweet all around.
Total: 19/25
Summary: (view spoiler)[
Elle is a 17 year old who lives with her step-mother and step-sisters in Charleston, South Carolina. She is obsessed with "Starfield"- a Startrek knock-off that has been in re-runs. She is devastated when up and coming movie star Darien Freeman get the main role of Carmindor, assuming that he will ruin the character she so loves. Through alternating POVs, we learn that Darien is also a Starfield fan, but he is coached by his father to have a movie star attitude, therefore hiding his true nerdy interest in Starfield.
Darien signs up to appear at the Starfield convention (ExcelsiCon), which was started by Elle's father when he was still alive. Darien will judge the cosplay contest and give out money, which Elle desperately needs in order to escape her stepmother.
Elle and Darien meet through text without knowing the other's identity and fall for each other. Despite her stepsister ruining her costume, Elle is able to get help from her new friend, Sage, to make it to the Conference and come in second place in the competition. Darien and Elle have a connection at the Ball, but Elle has to leave to make it home by midnight and Darien despairs that he doesn't know her name or how to find her.
Darien searches for Elle after the Ball, ultimately finding Sage, who helps him locate Elle. The two jump in the Magic Pumpkin (the food truck that Elle works at) and break into the Country Club where Elle is forced to work now, spoiling her step-sisters' claims that she was actually the mysterious Con woman who Darien fell in love with.
Darien brings Elle to the premiere of the new Starfield movie. Now living with Sage, she is free to pursue her own dreams and attend college. (hide spoiler)]
