Review: Where the Crawdads Sing
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I didn't think I was going to like this book. I probably shouldn't have liked it. It has all the elements of a book that I wouldn't be into: it's historical fiction (which is hit or miss for me), is rich with descriptive writing of nature, and moves at a slower pace. But this book sucked me in pretty quickly and I finished it in less than two days.
There are so many different elements to this book that it keeps things interesting: there's the historical perspective of the time and the socioeconomic elements of the small, marsh town that the family lives in, there's a survivalist story of young Kya making it on her own, there's some romance, some mystery, and even a bit of good courtroom drama. As soon as I thought I was getting tired of where the book was going, it would shift and I would be enthralled all over again.
I don't know, y'all. For some reason, this novel just worked for me. All of the characters were so beautifully formed and rich. None of them are wholly good or evil, but are a complex combination that is realistic. The ending messed me up. The whole thing was just so atmospheric and beautiful. If you haven't read it, read it now.
